6 Moving Tips You Should Know

We know all too well how stressful moving house can be, so we’ve put together a simple guide that will help you to fret less and enjoy the occasion more.

1. Plan ahead

If you’re using professional movers, try and provide them with a plan of the rooms in the new property so they know where to place furniture and boxes when they unload – and make sure they have access to your new address!

2. Food, drink and other essentials

As your cooker and fridge will be disconnected and the kettle packed away, prepare a flask of tea or coffee, some cold drinks, sandwiches and snacks to keep you going through the day. Mark the box that contains the kettle and other essentials, including a first aid kit, and make sure it’s the last box in and first one out of the removal van at your new home. Don’t pack important documents such as deeds, passports, and driving licences in a box for the van; put them in a folder and keep them with you.

3. Be ready for bed

At the end of what is likely to be a long and tiring day, the last thing you want to do is search for bedding, so clearly mark a box with all the bedding you need for a good night’s sleep. Chances are you’ll want a shower as well, so include some towels and toiletries in the box.

4. Last one out

Before your removals van leaves, check all the rooms to make sure nothing has been missed. Make sure you and team leader agree on the condition of your furniture ( take photos if necessary) in case of any damage that could lead to a claim. Reputable removal companies are fine with this – and we certainly are. Once the van has departed, check the utilities are all switched off, and doors and windows are locked.

5. At your new home

Inspect the new property to see that everything included in the sale is there and contact your solicitor if something’s missing. Take all the relevant meter readings and check any alarms are working. Once that’s done, it’s time to relax, so pop the cork on something bubbly and toast your new home!

6. Renting a Home
If you are renting, take photos of your old home before moving out this will help you to get all or part of your deposit back.
